The 2025 species in the wood list

Silver-washed fritilliary butterfly

At least publishing the latest list gives me the excuse to post a jolly summer picture.

A distinctly mixed year. Great to record 25 ‘new’ species, though that doesn’t mean they haven’t always been there. For instance, it includes a Beech tree and Dogwood – how did I miss those?

Great to spot a Holly Blue butterfly and a Redwing for the first time, though.

Bird, insect and fungi ID apps have also been really helpful.

On the downside, 50 tonnes of stricken Ash had to be felled, decimated by dieback and a danger to those walking through the wood. As many Ash trees as possible has been kept, but it’s devastating to see.

For the full list of what’s been recorded in the wood in 2025, go via the navigation menu to the page headed: Species recorded up to December 31, 2025.
