 A by no means exhaustive list of sites we’ve found useful and/or entertaining: 

1: Identifying species

General sites:

• Wildlife Sightings UK
• Wild About Britain – “hundreds of thousands of pages” on British wildlife.
• “Species Explorer” from The Wildlife Trusts.
• Natural History Museum’s  guide to British Natural History

Wildflowers:

The British Wild Flowers site also covers trees, shrubs, brambles, grasses, sedges, rushes and ferns.

Butterflies:

• UK Butterflies is a brilliant site.

Fungi:

• Visual Fungi does what it says on the tin.

2: Reading about other people’s woods

• A nice blog about Ninewells/Catbrook wood by Alan Waterman, who also publishes a site dedicated to woodland flora
• A well written blog about Alvecote Wood in Staffs.
• What’s going on at Chestnut Coppice, East Sussex.
• The Small Woodland Owners’ Group site hosts individual blogs and lots of links to resources.

3: Researching woodland issues and policy

• The Small Woods Association, simply the site for small wood owners and yes, of course, we are members so we would say that.
• The Woodland Trust has a brilliant site and yes, of course, we are members so, again, we would say that.
• We found our local office of the Forestry Commission very helpful.
• The Wildlife Trusts and, specifically, The Sussex Wildlife Trust. Yep, we’re members.
