Butterflies, Gatekeeper, June 2020

Glad to say the wood is alive with butterflies, including Maniola jurtina.

It’s actually a Meadow Brown! Gatekeeper normally has 2 white dots in the black pupil & white spts on the under hindwing.

    • Hi Neil, I changed my mind about 10 times on this one. It does actually have two white dots in the black pupil, one much smaller than the other. Was very unsure.

  2. People do often get confused with these. Also some Meadow Browns can be quite small, approaching Gatekeeper size. I haven’t seen one of the latter yet this year- usually common here, but I know they’ve started to appear judging by Facebook photos.

  3. I would guess so. Meadow Browns are quite variable in their spotting & I know quite lot of work was done on their genetics.
